Current Conditions

HURRICANE EARL UPDATE- 9:00PM 9/3/2010

Hurricane Earl is now down to a very low end Category 1 hurricane, with winds at 75mph. Once winds fall below 74mph, Earl will become a Tropical Storm. Thusfar, we've only picked up 0.02" of rain here in Monson, with little wind. As we head through the night, expect to see some light rain (maybe a few spotty moderate showers), and some light winds. Otherwise, Earl's effects should be confined to Southeastern New England. Below is the a recent radar/satellite image of Earl. A cold front that has been moving in just to our west is working to push Earl eastward. Had that cold front not been there, Earl likely would've made landfall somewhere over Eastern Massachusetts or Rhode Island. The red arrow shows a dry area pushing into the center of the hurricane, working to weaken it. The most recent track and radar images can be accessed via my previous update.

Earl Update

HURRICANE EARL- 1:00PM 9/3/2010

Earl Track

The first, northernmost rain band from Hurricane Earl has now reached Long Island, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod. This should reach our area within the next hour or two, with steadier rain arriving later this evening (6-8PM). While winds will be breezy at times, I don't expect much over 20 mph. Most of the forecast models agree on a track bringing the center of Earl within 30 miles southeast of Nantucket. With 85mph winds, Earl is now down to Category 1, and should remain so as it brushes past the Cape and Islands. Hurricane Warnings remain in effect for Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard, with Tropical Storm Warnings for Plymouth and Bristol Counties, as well as Southeast Rhode Island and Coastal Connecticut. Hot, Sunny Summer- 3:30PM 9/2/2010

With a high temperature of 93.4°, today marks the 12th 90° or higher day and the 2nd heat wave of the year. In most years, we don't have any heat waves (3 consecutive days with temps 90 or above). Though local media might say we had a "heat wave," the data they use is from Westover in Chicopee - generally warmer than here in Monson. Last summer we saw only 3 total 90° + days. This summer has also been perhaps one of the nicest. With only 9.75" of rain from June through August (most of which falling in June), this summer has been much drier than last summer's (June-August) 17.17", with nearly 9" falling in August alone.
